#BottleCapChallenge is the latest craze to take over the social media and yet no one knows exactly how it started.
Unlike the Ice Bucket Challenge which went viral in August 2014 and promoted awareness of ALS encouraging people to donate to research, the #BottleCapChallenge doesn’t have such lofty goals; it’s about showing a specific skill.

#1 Jason Statham +20 million views
The first #BottleCapChallenge video that went viral was Jason Statham’s with over 20 million views to date:
#2 Donnie Yen +10 million views
Hong Kong actor and martial artist Donnie Yen best known for his portrayal of grandmaster Ip Man takes on the challenge but he adds an element of risk – he does it blindfolded. People liked that Donnie took it one step further and his video received 10+ million views.
#3 John Mayer +7 million views
In his post, Jason says he was challenged by John Mayer. I totally expected Jason to perform the challenge brilliantly, but who would have thought that singer-songwriter and guitarist John Mayer had such unexpected skills?
Although John Mayer’s video came before Jason Statham’s it has only 7 million views. John doesn’t look as good as Jason unscrewing the bottle cap, does he? I guess that’s why John is a musical artist and Jason is an action movie star.
#4 Mariah Carey +4 million views
Known for her five-octave vocal range, Mariah Carey is one of the greatest singers in music history. During her 30-year music career, Mariah Carey won five Grammy Awards, nineteen World Music Awards, ten American Music Awards, and fifteen Billboard Music Awards.
Did you really expect Mariah to kick the bottle cap? Of course not! She displayed her most powerful feature – her amazing voice!

Brands are looking for virality on social media. They dream of having one of their posts go viral because it means they earn increased brand awareness and media attention. But not all brands can create viral videos. There’s no recipe.
Joining a fast-growing movement like this challenge is a way for brands to entertain their followers and break the pattern of branded posts.
It’s easier for ordinary folks and stars to take on challenges. When doing challenges, in order to be successful brands need to meet two criteria: be authentic and pick the challenge which is relevant.

Aviation Gin joins BMW as one of the brands to take on the challenge. They enlisted the help of their owner, none other than Hollywood movie star Ryan Reynolds.
